Transmission of hepatitis B and C in the dental practice

Author: Vlaho Brailo
Abstract:

Viral hepatitis B and C are blood-transmitted diseases, whose transmission can occur during dental treatment. The transmission can occur from patient to dentist, from dentist to patient and from patient to patient. The most common route of transmission from the patient to the dentist is a sting on the contaminated needle. Transmission from the dentist to the patient can occur if an infected dentist does not use protective gloves. Transmission from one patient to another can occur through contaminated instruments and work surfaces. Routine infection control measures effectively eliminate/minimize the risk of transmission of hepatitis B and C in the dental practice. Vaccination against hepatitis B effectively protects healthcare workers.
