Amputation and devascularisation injuries in children

Abstract:

Amputation and devascularisation injuries in children in Croatia are rare, but due to the treatment complexity and the possible consequences on the further development and functioning of the child they represent a serious problem which can only be managed in a few hospitals in Croatia. Treatment principles of these injuries are based on the necessity for maximal preservation of the length of the injured extremity, early functional rehabilitation and return to daily and school activities. Significant regenerative and rehabilitation ability in children allows us to widen the indications for replantation procedures, as well as the choice of reconstructive procedures when compared to adults with similar injuries. Due to the frequent associated injuries and complexity of reconstructive procedures, these children should only be treated in centers with plastic-reconstructive specialists and pediatric surgeons, as well as with pediatric intensive care capacities.
