Causes and treatment of habitual abortion
Spontaneous abortion is a common complication of pregnancy. Most lost pregnancies are terminated in spontaneous abortion, and this is more common with shorter pregnancies. If two or more pregnancies are lost consecutively, it is called a habitual abortion. There is a greater incidence of the habitual abortion among couples treated for sterility compared to couples of the general population. Habitual abortions may occur due to genetic factors, uterine anomalies, thrombophilia, endocrinopathy (yellow body insufficiency, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease), immune disorders, male factors and environmental factors. Habitual abortion occurs in about 1% of fertile reproductive pairs and its cause is unknown in about 50% of case, while treatment is currently possible only for the group of non-genetic aetiology. The clinical approach for couples with this clinical entity, including genetic informing, is exceptionally complex.
