Abstract:

Although sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and infections (STIs) are a global public health problem, the current situation with STD in Croatia is relatively favourable, as shown from the reports of infectious disease cases collected by the Epidemiological Service of the Croatian Institute for Public Health at the national level. Classic STDs are suppressed and rare. HIV-infection and AIDS are kept under control and show low incidence rate. The main problem and important professional and scientific challenge today is the determination of the degree in which asymptomatic and oligosymptomatic STIs lead to the subsequent occurrence of chronic, severe illnesses and sequelae, as well as further spread of STIs and STDs in the population. In this regard, it is important to assess the timing and appropriateness of antimicrobial treatment. The current situation with regards to STD in Croatia is maintained due to high-quality interdisciplinary work and collaboration of different medical professions, systematic health care measures and overall positive humane attitude towards this problem.
