Abstract:

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections are the most common health care-associated infections resulting from the widespread use of urinary catheterization, which is infrequently inappropriate. Approximately 15-25% of patients in general hospitals have a urinary catheter inserted at some point during their hospital stay. The most effective way to reduce the incidence of catheter-associated urinary tract infection is to reduce the use of urinary catheterization by restricting it only to patients with clear indications and by removing the catheter as soon as it is no longer needed. Introducing the obligation for a doctor to fill in the form, i.e. submit a written request, for urinary catheterisation of a patient has been shown an important strategic measure in the prevention of catheter-associated urinary tract infections.
