Abstract:

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common of all sleep related breathing disorders. It is associated with numerous chronic illnesses and conditions presenting medical and socioeconomic burden to the community. Repetitive episodes of absent or diminished ventilation due to upper airway obstruction during sleep affects respiratory function and sleep quality leading to poor daytime efficiency of the patient and eventually, organ dysfunction. Overnight polysomnography is a standard diagnostic in OSA used for precise quantification of the extent of the respiratory and sleep disorder. The main therapy is the administration of positive airway pressure, along with behavioral changes and the comorbidities treatment. It improves respiratory and sleep function as well as quality of life. As OSA is an underestimated though important disorder, an in-depth approach is required for diagnosis and treatment.
