Conventional therapy in inflammatory bowel diseases
In the treatment of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), so called conventional therapy is used, including aminosalicylates, corticosteroids, immunosuppressive agents and antibiotics. Twenty years ago, the so-called „biological therapy“ is introduced, including anti-cytokine and anti-integrin drugs. The goal of IBD treatment is the absence of symptoms and achieving mucosal healing thus preventing complications (hospitalization and surgery) and potentially changing the course of the illness. In most patients the disease can be well controlled with the conventional therapy. It is necessary to master the indications for the conventional treatment and its potential side effects.
