Lamellar keratoplasty rediscovered
Author: Dean Šarić, Zdravko Mandić
Abstract:
Corneal transplantation is the method of choice in the treatment of corneal diseases. Its purpose is to improve visual acuity, alleviate the pain and gain cosmetic improvement. Lamellar keratoplasty that was abandoned 60 years ago and replaced by penetrating keratoplasty, which produced better results, is now being reintroduced into clinical practice due to improved ophthalmological methods and advances in pharmacologic treatment and equipment, especially the development of femtosecond lasers. The new lamellar keratoplastic techniques have lowered the rate of complications, postoperative astigmatism and graft rejection.
