Abstract:

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading public health issues today. Timely diagnosis, treatment and prevention of CKD progression have direct impact on the prognosis of these patients. A timely selection of renal replacement method and preparation of the patients with advanced CKD for kidney transplantation, if there are no contraindications, are necessary. Treatment of renal anaemia, mineral metabolism disorders and other complications is very important in CKD patients. About 30% of the patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease treated with dialysis are on the waiting list for a kidney transplant from deceased donors in Croatia. Most patients have no contraindications for transplantation. The main causes leading to the need for kidney transplantation are increasingly older age and high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes mellitus. Prior to inclusion in the waiting list, patients with ES RD have to undergo a comprehensive and careful diagnostic evaluation
