Abstract:

Most children are cooperative and well-behaved during their dental visits. However, there are also children who require a special approach to achieve the desired co-operation. The dentist has to be familiar with the characteristics of the child as it pertains to her/his psychological developmental status to be able to identify and determine the appropriate approach. There are many strategies for effectively managing child behaviour in the dental clinic, and it is the dentist who decides upon the most appropriate procedure regarding the child and their future cooperation. Regardless of the chosen method of treatment it is important to bear in mind that a dentist's good communication skills, careful approach and empathy can achieve mutual satisfaction and success in the dental care. If the psychological approach in controlling behavior and overcoming fear and anxiety in children during the dental treatment gives no results, medication may be considered.
