Primary prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and their public health significance

Abstract:

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are among the leading causes of the acute illnesses, chronic health impairments and mortality, with possibly severe medical and psychological consequences. Their primary prevention, early detection, timely diagnosis and effective treatment are the most important measures that may contribute to the maintenance of the population age structure and demographic renewal. For comprehensive understanding of the public health importance of STIs, it is necessary to take into account their incidence, complications and consequences not only in the national context, but also at the European and global level. Primary prevention, including education, reproductive counseling and vaccination against HPV infection, is of the utmost importance for the effective combat against STI.
