European guidelines on good practices for patient blood management
The European Commission has published two guides for the implementation of Patient Blood Management (PBM) program in hospitals in the European Union. Experience shows that PBM reduces perioperative blood loss and the transfusion needs, perioperative morbidity, mortality, length of hospital stay, and costs. Preoperative screening, diagnosis, and treatment of anemia are essential. However, many barriers limit the introduction of PBM into clinical practice. The series of simple, economically justified, best-practice, feasible, and evidence-based measures will enable any hospital to reduce both anemia prevalence on the day of surgery, as well as the anemia-related non-indicated blood transfusions.
