Rapid ultrasound in shock and hypotension – RUSH protocol

Author: Ivan Gornik
Abstract:

The ultrasound examination of a patient with hypotension or shock should be staged or protocolized to avoid missing any of the elements, or the specificity of the patient should be taken into account when performing the examination. There are two basic mnemonic approaches to the examination protocol: 1) heart/volume/blood vessels and 2) heart, vena cava, Morrison‘s space, aorta, lung, pleura. The most important thing for the examiner is to establish a logical order of examination of all the constituent elements in order to understand the possible pressures and their significance. With regard to the protocol, it is clear that knowledge of all the different elements is necessary for a thorough investigation. Each of the elements of the Rapid Ultrasound in Shock and Hypotension (RUSH) protocol can be used independently and in context, but can also be learned and used outside the RUSH protocol.
